About herbs and their use - a short journey into the past

Since time immemorial, people have sought to find medicines that would relieve pain and cure various diseases. As historical research in this area shows, in each period of human development and ancient civilizations, the healing properties of certain medicinal plants were identified, studied and passed on to subsequent generations, which improved old formulas and discovered new ones. Today we call this innovation, and people's interest in medicinal plants has resulted in today's modern and sophisticated technology for their processing and use.

The extraordinary and deep relationship between man and herbs has existed since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the paintings in the Lascaux cave in France, dating from 13,000 to 25,000 BC. These magnificent cave paintings were discovered in 1940 and perfectly illustrate the symbiosis of nature and man. The extraordinary simplicity of the artistic means used reflects everyday scenes from the lives of prehistoric ancestors, showing the fauna and flora present in everyday life. This is a kind of proof of the long and loving relationship between man and herbs.

Medicinal and care use of plants.

The word "cosmetic" comes from the Greek word "kosmeticos" which means beautifying,

– having the power and skill to arrange and decorate. The common use of this term dates back to ancient Rome, where the slaves performing massages in the baths were called cosmetics.

Man in prehistoric times 3000 BC used colors for decoration, to attract animals he wanted to hunt, and also to survive the attack of the enemy, dyeing the skin and decorating the body for protection. The origin of cosmetics was associated with hunting, fighting and superstition, and only later with medicine.

The art of decorating one's appearance was highly developed in ancient Egypt, Arabia, Persia, India, China; later - in ancient Rome, Greece, Byzantium, Florence, France and other countries. In ancient Egypt, not only noblemen, warriors and priests painted themselves, but also people of low status. They used bleach, powders, rouge, painted their nails. In ancient India and China, all kinds of balms, herbal incense, hair and nail polishes and ink were very popular. Rose water, almond milk and many other cosmetics that we use so willingly today for daily care "came" from Persia.

Plants used in cosmetics in most cases have medicinal properties, are well-absorbed and do not burden the metabolism so much. Since we are talking about complex complexes of substances, their effect is also complex. The actions of individual components very often successfully complement each other.

In order to provide comprehensive anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, astringent, emollient or other types of therapeutic and cosmetic effects, a complex of biologically active substances (vitamins, trace elements, proteins, enzymes, hormones, essential oils, etc.) is often added to the preparations. The more substances of natural origin, especially biologically active substances of plant origin, a cosmetic preparation contains, the more valuable and useful it is considered.
