The Endocannabinoid System in the Skin – A Puzzle of One Piece

Each of us learned in school about the circulatory, digestive, respiratory systems; about their operation and importance. Meanwhile, only recently have we learned that there is another, equally important system in the human body. What is its biological significance? Why is it considered the guardian of our internal balance? Read and learn about the extraordinary power of the endocannabinoid system and its beneficial significance for skin health.

Endocannabinoid System – What is it?

Endocannabinoid system is a network of receptors distributed throughout the body. They are literally everywhere: the nervous system, digestive system, immune system; in the skin, brain, intestines. They ensure that our body functions in balance and homeostasis.

The system consists of three elements:

  • receptors, which are located on the surface of cells (two types of receptors have been documented in the body so far: CB1 and CB2)
  • endocannabinoids – small molecules that activate receptors
  • metabolic enzymes –they utilize cannabinoids once the body has used their beneficial power

How is the endocannabinoid system activated?

The endocannabinoid system affects the regulation of all vital functions in the body. It is our internal guardian, who makes sure that the whole thing works like a well-oiled mechanism. In the event that something bad starts to happen (disease, inflammation) - then the system comes into action and starts producing endocannabinoids, which start to restore balance. Remember the movie "Once Upon a Time Life"? When the body had an accident, an infection - special guards with batons would sound the alarm, and tiny people would come into action, whose task was, for example, to seal blood vessels, fill a bone defect, etc. The endocannabinoid system behaves in a similar way. It sounds the alarm - and starts repairing. But it has somewhat limited capabilities. Our body is able to naturally produce only two types of endocannabinoids. However, it turns out that there is a natural substance that supports their production in large quantities. This substance is CBD included hemp.

CBD and the Endocannabinoid System

CBD, or cannabidiol, is an organic chemical compound, one of over 100 cannabinoids found in hemp - plants of the Cannabis sativa species. CBD has a similar structure to endocannabinoids found in the human body. Therefore, when it binds with our cannabinoid receptors, they are activated and "repaired" what is currently functioning worse. CBD also stimulates the endocannabinoid system to produce more endocannabinoids. It works exactly where there is a need for intervention: it inhibits inflammation, supports immunity (you can read a separate entry about it, which you will find HERE ); it calms, regulates the secretion of compounds. That is why CBD works so well in supporting care skin with problems.

The endocannabinoid system in the skin

The extraordinary therapeutic power of cannabinoids is increasingly used in dermatology and cosmetology.

Why does CBD work so effectively on our skin? Because it contains both types of endocannabinoid system receptors, the aforementioned CB1 and CB2 receptors. CBD, contained in e.g. ointments, creams Whether oils, binds primarily to the CB2 receptor and gets to work, activating the body to repair what is temporarily underperforming (dryness, overproduction of sebum, etc.). Both compounds fit together perfectly, like pieces of the same puzzle.

In the case of skin problems, there are many opportunities to complete the "puzzle", because receptors can be found not only in the cells of the dermis and epidermis, but also in hair follicles and even sweat glands.

The beneficial effects of CBD on the skin

Skin problems are among the most common health and aesthetic problems. Acne, dryness, all kinds of skin allergies – these are ailments that effectively worsen the quality of life.

Natural cannabidiol, which is CBD, binds to receptors in the skin and… the puzzle pieces start to click into place. They stimulate the body to do exactly what the skin needs:

  • combating inflammation and neutralizing free radicals
  • reconstruction and regeneration
  • maintaining the proper level of hydration
  • regulation of sebum production
  • fighting infections caused by bacteria and fungi
  • eliminating allergy symptoms (itching, burning, dryness, redness)

The power of cannabinoids is also revealed in the face of such serious diseases as atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. Research analyses published in "The Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology" have shown that ointments and creams rich in CBD can be helpful in dealing with AZS, psoriasis and so-called contact allergy (which is caused by contact with an allergen, e.g. jewellery containing nickel). The power of CBD is revealed in the inhibition of inflammatory processes, and additionally the essential fatty acids (EFA) contained in CBD have a nourishing, anti-allergic, regenerative and immunostimulating effect on the skin.
