THC, also known as tetrahydrocannabinol, is the main psychoactive substance found in cannabis and, next to CBD, the second main active compound.
CBD and THC are almost identical in molecular structure. Both are made up of 30 hydrogen atoms, 21 carbon atoms, and 2 oxygen atoms. Their different properties are provided by the different arrangement of these atoms.
And it is THC that is responsible for the euphoric, pain-relieving, and stimulating effects of cannabis – a phenomenon commonly referred to as the “high.” Although THC is not the only cannabinoid with intoxicating properties, its concentration is high enough that it is this cannabinoid that is responsible for the intoxicating effect.
Nevertheless, THC has many documented health benefits that can be used to treat a wide range of mental and physical conditions.
THC affects users in two ways: the vast majority of users describe the so-called "high" as a positive experience. They report sensory stimulation, elevated mood, euphoria, a clear state of mind, and even signs of improved cognitive function. In low and moderate doses, these feelings are well-balanced. However, very high doses of THC can result in experiences of anxiety and paranoia. In turn, cannabidiol CBD has properties that counteract the excessive activity of THC, thus reducing the unwanted feeling of intoxication caused by taking too much of this cannabinoid.
It's worth noting that neither CBD nor THC can cause a fatal overdose because they do not interact with the area of the brain stem that controls breathing.
Studies show that THC has neuroprotective effects, meaning it helps keep our brain in good shape. Scientists have begun to follow this path in terms of preventing and treating Alzheimer's disease. Tetrahydrocannabinol, when taken in the right doses, elevates mood and improves concentration, and changes the perception of pain (reduces it). It can help with migraines, injuries, and inflammation.
THC is extracted from cannabis. Hemp naturally has low levels of this cannabinoid, so extracting THC from hemp is simply pointless.
