CBDA and CBGA compounds found in hemp may protect against infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus – this is suggested by the latest research conducted by scientists from Oregon State University and published in the Journal of Natural Products.
In the search for an effective weapon in the fight against SARS-CoV-2, Richard van Breemen and his colleagues showed that cannabigerolic acid (CBGA) and cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) bind to the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, blocking a critical step in the process leading to infection of human cells.
“Our studies showed that cannabis compounds were equally effective against SARS-CoV-2 variants, including the B.1.1.7 (alpha) variant, which was first detected in the UK, and the B.1.351 (beta) variant, which was first detected in South Africa,” explains Richard van Breemen.
"Every part of the infection and replication cycle is a potential target for antiviral intervention, and linking the spike protein receptor-binding domain to the human cell surface receptor ACE2 is a critical step in this cycle. This means that cell entry inhibitors such as cannabis acids can be used to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection, as well as to shorten the infection by preventing virus particles from infecting human cells with the enzyme ACE2, which is abundant on the outer membrane of endothelial cells in the lungs and other organs," van Breemen explains.
Laboratory tests showed that cannabigerolic acid CBGA and cannabidiolic acid CBDA prevented the coronavirus spike protein from infecting human epithelial cells and SARS-CoV-2 from entering the cells.

CBDA and CBGA are produced by hemp as precursors to CBD and CBG and studies have shown them to have the highest affinity for the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein.
