Horses, due to their build and lifestyle – especially sport horses, are particularly susceptible to joint injuries and diseases. Both post-traumatic pain resulting from injury and chronic pain associated with arthritis can significantly reduce the quality of life of these beautiful animals. Traditional methods of treating this type of pain are increasingly supported by CBD, a natural plant compound with unique healing properties.

Injuries and contusions – a common problem for sport horses

Horses that actively participate in competitions are particularly susceptible to injuries and trauma to the ankle joints. Intensive training and competitions strain not only the joints, but also the tendons and muscles, which can lead to overloads, strains and tears. Even an inappropriate surface (e.g. too hard or soggy) can lead to serious joint and hoof diseases. Horses, although powerful and majestic, are in fact very delicate animals.

Arthritis and chronic degenerative pain in horses

After a busy life as competition horses, many horses begin to struggle with arthritis and chronic joint pain. This is a classic degenerative joint disease that affects older horses. It is often accompanied by hoof diseases, including podotrochlosis.[1]. This involves constant pain that prevents animals from functioning normally.

Why can CBD help with this?

Traditional methods of treating pain in horses include the use of painkillers and anti-inflammatory medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and opioids.[2]. Although effective, these methods often come with the risk of side effects, such as liver damage, kidney damage, and gastrointestinal problems. That is why, for several years, there has been a growing interest in alternative and more natural treatments that can provide pain relief without putting additional strain on the horse's body. In this context, cannabidiol (CBD), a natural chemical compound obtained from hemp, is becoming increasingly popular. It has a number of medicinal properties that can be beneficial in treating pain and inflammation in animals, including horses..

How does CBD help relieve pain in horses?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of over 100 cannabinoids found in hemp. Its therapeutic properties and effectiveness in treating various types of pain have been documented in numerous studies. CBD interacts with endocannabinoid system, which both humans and animals have. And it is through this system, through interaction with the appropriate receptors in our body (and the body of animals) - CBD can positively influence many functions. One such reaction is, among others, the reaction to pain and its reduction. An equally promising effect, when it comes to animals, is the reduction of inflammation - which causes this pain.

Pain Reduction in Horses with CBD – What Does the Research Say?

CBD reduces inflammation in the body while also causing less pain from the condition. Research in this area is rapidly expanding.Recently, an in vitro study identified the expression of a CBD target receptor in dorsal root ganglia, supporting further research for use in chronic pain.[3] – we read in Veterinary Advantage magazine.

In one American study, 41 horses with symptoms Osteoarthritis Specific doses of CBD were administered. The horses' behavior, movement and reactions to pain were observed. Improvement was noted in 71%, and in terms of pain assessment, improvement occurred in 84 % of 32 horses and anxiety decreased in 22 % horses that showed it. These data indicate that CBD has an effect on improving health and reducing pain in these animals[4].

CBD for Chronic Pain in Older Horses

Many horses struggle with chronic, ongoing pain resulting from multiple conditions (e.g. joint pain, toothache, acute arthritis) and age. CBD can also be of help in such cases, especially where popular medications do not bring the expected results, e.g. in horses that do not tolerate NSAIDs or corticosteroids.CBD pathways are very closely related to the cyclooxygenase pathway that Bute and Banamine target[5] – writes the previously cited Veterinary Advantage magazine. (Banamine is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug for cattle and horses).

Summary

Plant medicine can be a great alternative for horse owners who want to take care of their animals holistically. CBD does just that, because by connecting to various receptors in the endocannabinoid system, it regulates many body functions. In the case of horses, it is not only important in the context of anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. It also has a confirmed calming effect and reduces anxiety and tension. You can read about it in one of our previous posts: Gallop to Health: How Does CBD Affect Calmness and Peace in Horses?

CBD can be a valuable support in the treatment of post-traumatic pain and arthritis in horses, helping them not only feel better but also regain mobility. This is especially important in the case of geriatric horses who struggle with a variety of health conditions. CBD is a natural solution that can help improve the quality of life of these wonderful animals, giving them the chance for a long and healthy life at our side.
